Romeo and Juliet - A Modern Tale of Love and Tragedy

(With apologies to William Shakespeare)

The Players: Kevin Rudd as Romeo, Julia Gillard as Juliet, Wayne Swan as Paris, Alister Jordan as Balthasar and, introducing, Tony Abbott as “The Narrator”.

Act 1. In the Beginning

Swearing in Ceremony, Government House, Canberra, Wednesday 3 December 2007, 10.25 am

Julia (in soliloquy)

"O Kevin’o, Kevin’o! wherefore art thou Kevin’o?
Deny thy father and refuse thy name.
Or if thou wilt not, be but sworn my love
And I’ll no longer be a brunette."

Kevin (in soliloquy)

"What’s in a name? That which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet"

Kevin

"It is the east, and Julia is the sun”

Julia

"Not stepping o’er the bounds of modesty"

Kevin

"Tempt not a desperate man"

The Narrator

"Wisely and slow; they stumble that run fast"

Act 2. The Meeting

Parliament House Canberra, Wednesday 23 June 2010, 10.25 pm

Julia

"For you and I are past our dancing days"

Kevin (in soliloquy)

"See, how she leans her cheek upon her hand!
O that I were a glove upon that hand,
that I might touch that cheek!"

Kevin

"Good Night, Good night! Parting is such sweet sorrow, that I shall say good night till it be morrow."

Act 3. The Betrayl

In caucus Parliament House Canberra, Thursday 24 June 2010, 9.00 am

Kevin (in soliloquy)

“This day’s black fate on more days doth depend:
This but begins the woe others must end."

Kevin

"A plague o’ both your houses!"

Julia

"Kevin is banished,
There is no end, no limit, measure, bound,
In that word’s death. No words can that woe sound."

Wayne

"O! she doth teach the torches to burn bright”

Act 4. The Lodge

The Lodge, Canberra, Thursday 24 June 2010, 10.25 pm

Kevin

"O woe! O woeful, woeful, woeful day!
Most lamentable day. Most woeful day
That ever, ever I did yet behold!
O day, O day, O day! O hateful day!
Never was seen so black a day as this.
O woeful day! O woeful day!"

Alister

"Methinks I see thee, now thou art so low,
As one dead in the bottom of a tomb."

Kevin

"Tis torture, and not mercy. Heaven is here
Where Julia lives, and every cat and dog
And little mouse, every unworthy thing,
Live here in heaven and may look on her,
But Kevin may not."

Alister

"A greater power than we can contradict
Hath thwarted our intents."

Kevin

"One fairer than my love? The all-seeing sun
Ne’er saw her match since first the world begun."

The Narrator

"For never was a story of more woe
Than this of Julia and her Kevin’o."

These are all exact quotations from William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. Only the order in which they appear as well as the names of characters have been changed to protect the innocent and punish the wicked!

What can we learn from Australia’s Best Places to Work

BRW’s Annual Best Places to Work survey came out this week. While traditionally, and more so perhaps in overseas surveys, the best places to work survey has been full of large, high tech organisation with funky décor and a range of perks such as Google; who has been consistently at the top. Australia’s survey includes a larger proportion of medium size businesses from a range of industries with more than one third of the top 50 having less than 50 employees. While some of the organisation got on the list because of perks or a "fun" work environment, the most common areas that lead to employee satisfaction were management style, flexible work practices, training and development opportunities and philanthropic activities. These are all areas that small to medium size businesses could focus on or adopt to make their business a better place to work.
