No waiting

Standing at the Adelaide International Airport baggage carrousel last Thursday morning, I struck up a conversation with the only other passenger who had cleared immigration and, like me, was waiting for his bags, to proceed through customs. He had just been on a nine day world tour, marketing his products at international expos in Italy and China among other countries, and I was returning from Sydney on an international flight bound for Singapore.

As we talked, I was struck by the energy and enthusiasm he had for his business and the opportunities he envisaged for the future - opportunities observed on his travels, opportunities for future excitement. I felt an immediate attraction to this person - no, not in that way - a connection that bridges awkwardness on meeting someone for the first time. As we waited, I listened, transfixed by his latent charisma, and then it occurred to me - I know this person - "Are you Michael Marinos from Nova Concepts" I almost apologetically stumbled out. "Yes I am" came the equally startled reply.

Although we had never met, Status has been working with Michael for many years, supplying staff to meet his ever expanding business empire that includes one of the fastest growing Pets Products businesses in Australia.

At the National IT Awards presentation dinner in Sydney last week, waiting for the best website / best web strategy honour to be bestowed upon us, I also met some fascinating people, some of whom were from overseas, some from interstate and five from South Australia, whom I also found to have an immediate business and/or personal connection with. It was a week where the theory of "six degrees of separation" seemed hopelessly inadequate in explaining the universe I traversed.

On reflection, Michael and I weren’t waiting, we were enjoying ourselves. So next time you are in a queue or find yourself willing time to move on, don’t be a waiter - take joy in your self and those you come in contact with. Otherwise, you may miss the opportunity of just being and sharing your presence with others, and who knows where that may lead you.

Taxing Times

Last week, the Treasurer, Mr Wayne Swan, handed down the Federal Budget for 2009-10. Below is a summary, which outlines some of the key points, related to employment and small business taxes, as well as changes to taxation arrangements that may be of interest to our employers and small business owners.

Small Business Taxes

Increase in Investment Allowance for Small Business
The Small Business and General Business Tax Break will be expanded to allow a one-off bonus tax deduction of 50 per cent to small businesses with a turnover of less than $2 million that acquire an eligible asset between 13 December 2008 and 31 December 2009 and install it ready for use by 31 December 2010.

The previously announced 30 per cent and 10 per cent bonuses will continue to apply to all other businesses.

Small business entities need to invest a minimum of $1,000 on an individual asset in order to qualify for the 50% investment allowance.

Status Footy Tipping Competition

Lisa and Sharmila
Lisa Perry, left,
with Status’ Employment Consultant - Sharmila Wadforth

Round 8 and the favourites returned in emphatic style this week with 20 of our tippers having a perfect round, including 12 who were within 6 points of the adjusted margin. However, one tipper did produce a "Nadia Comaneci", with a perfect round of 8 correct tips and zero margin, along with 1,358 tippers nationally! So congratulations this week goes to Status’ Lisa Perry, who bound in with hubby, David, and kids first thing Monday morning to collect their prize. Here’s hoping the Cooper’s and Croser will pacify a sleep deprived Mum and Dad.

To everyone else, better luck next round and don’t forget to check out the leader board. There are currently more than 80 active tippers in our competition and after logging into the AFL website, you can view your position on the ladder by selecting the Status Employment Services competition.

You can join the competition at anytime during the year and will be allocated all of the away teams from previous rounds as your starting position on the leader board. If you would like to join but are having difficulty registering, please contact our footy tipping administrator, Dora Zalunardo, on 8377 0101, and she will arrange for someone to step you through the process.
