Prospecting

What a strange world we live in. Societies have always regulated partnered relationships - business or pleasure - in one way or another. In the Western world, exclusivity is a hallmark of the ideal traditional marriage, and so it acts to regulate "behaviour". Practice, of course, does not always conform with intent but it represents an aspiration shared by couples and their social communities - the wedding ceremony being the public statement of the transition between "availability" and the exclusiveness of marriage.

For those who choose the traditional pathway of engagement, commitment to one’s partner is often a test of fidelity, which may remain intact, right up until the curious Western celebration known as the stag/hen night. Then, for what can only be explained as subatomic brain freeze, all observance of societal expectations is expunged in one raucous night of rampant indulgence.

Over the years I have attended a number of stag nights, both in my youth and as a mature adult and these are never sober affairs, but I have never experienced a hen’s night, that is, until recently! And so, when the opportunity presented itself, I accompanied my partner to a hen’s night, purely in the interests of sociological research, of course.

Apart from the hired help, I was one of only two males in a seething pool of 150 plus very animated females who were all having great fun. They didn’t seem to mind my presence; truth be known, I don’t think any of them actually acknowledged my existence - they were all too busy enjoying the food, drink and the bawdy humour of the hostess. But what really got them excited was the hired help who danced for, as opposed to with, them. We witnessed the performances of the great troubadours - Vegas, Ethan and Ice - whose Mikhail Baryshnikov dancing skills were only surpassed by their Adonis bodies. And as I drifted off to sleep, or was it passed out in the knowledge that I was watching grown men dance, accompanied only by poor music selections and a bath towel, I realised that the male and the female of the species are not Venus and Mars at all but polar opposites looking for validation in all the wrong places.

The whole evening reminded me of a medieval slave trading event, where buyers are whipped into a frothy frenzy by accomplished sellers who are never the owners of the goods on sale. Is this where marketing originated from?

Business relationships are no different to this in that a seller is offering for sale a benefit that will satisfy a buyer’s need. Good business relationships are like good marriages, built on trust, honesty and fidelity, where smoke and mirrors are the preserve of the "Carnie folk", that both parties can enjoy independent of each other but not at the expense of their relationship.

The Sales Process - Part 1

Status, finds itself in new territory this year. We are embarking on new opportunities that will see us expand our services to the suburbs of Salisbury, Elizabeth, Kilkenny, Port Adelaide and Noarlunga, whilst maintaining our operations at Marion, Welland and Modbury. Part of the reason for this is because Status has just been awarded a substantial Commonwealth contract to deliver language, literacy and numeracy services from these locations making our Organisation the largest provider of these services in South Australia.

However, what really excites us about the future is the opportunity to use this expanded footprint to develop new products and services and bring these to a market hungry for new, fresh and creative employment solutions. As such, we will soon launch our WorkLinX venture, an innovative program of highly specialised work experience activities designed to smooth the transition, and bridge the gap between, unemployment and employment.

This represents a substantial challenge for our staff at Status as we will initially need to "sell" our services to organisations that we have traditionally viewed as our competitors. Bearing this in mind we thought we’d take a generic look at "the sale process" over the next two weeks and remind our readers of the 6 steps to building a successful sales approach. This week we are covering the first 3 steps of the sales process.

Status Footy Tipping Competition

Unbelievably, we had a perfect tipper this week, with Status’ own Tarsha Franklin tipping the "bird flipping" Richmond Tigers to upset Fremantle Dockers at Subiaco to give her eight from eight. The only thing that would have made, mum-to-be, Tarsha, happier would have been the opportunity to celebrate her victory with a few drinks courtesy of her winnings.

Congratulations Tarsha, enjoy the celebrations in a few months time.

Round 11 this week marks the midway point of the 2009 AFL football season, and it is also the week that determines our mid year prize of two tickets to the Adelaide Cabaret Festivals’ "The Dad & Dave Show" featuring Jimmy Barnes and David Campbell on 14th June 2008, next Sunday week, as well as dinner at the Festival Centre Bistro and late night entertainment in the Piano Bar.

Our mid year prize this year is valued at $250 per couple and will be awarded to:

  • 1st, 20th and 50th ranked tipper on the Status AFL Footy Tipping leader board, and their partner
  • The tipper with the lowest cumulative margin rounds 1-11, and their partner
  • The lowest ranked tipper, and their partner, who has submitted deliberative tips in each of the rounds 1-11, without defaulting to the away game teams allocated when tips are not submitted prior to matches
  • two mystery winners and their partners

We will make contact with the winners on Monday and advise the results in next week’s edition of Status enews.

To everyone else, better luck next round and don’t forget to check out the leader board. There are currently more than 80 active tippers in our competition and after logging into the AFL website, you can view your position on the ladder by selecting the Status Employment Services competition.

You can join the competition at anytime during the year and will be allocated all of the away teams from previous rounds as your starting position on the leader board. If you would like to join but are having difficulty registering, please contact our footy tipping administrator, Dora Zalunardo, on 8377 0101, and she will arrange for someone to step you through the process.
